Pre-reading

clap:  quarter, half, whole notes

 

Level 1

clap: quarter, half, whole notes.

identify: number of beats for quarter notes & rests, half notes, whole notes.

 

Level 2

clap: quarter notes & rests, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes.

identify:  number of beats for quarter notes & rests, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes & rests.

 

Level 3

clap: eighth note pairs, quarter notes & rests, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes & rests, tied notes.

write in the counting for rhythm examples in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 meter.

explain the meaning of the numbers in a time signature.

listen & select a rhythmic pattern from two written examples.

 

Level 4

clap: eighth note pairs, quarter notes & rests, dotted quarter followed by eighth note, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes & rests, upbeats.

write in the counting for rhythm examples in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 meter.

explain the meaning of the numbers in a time signature.

listen & identify the pulse of a piece as having 3 or 4 beats per measure (piece will contain no eighth notes or upbeats).

rhythmic dictation: write the pattern you hear: two measures in 4/4 meter, using quarter, half, dotted half, whole notes.

 

Level 5

clap:  eighths notes & rests, quarter notes & rests, dotted quarter followed by eighth note, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes & rests, eighth note triplets, upbeats.  pattern may be in 3/4, 4/4, 3/8, 6/8 meter.

write in the counting for rhythm examples in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/8, 6/8 meter.

listen & identify the pulse of a piece as having 3 or 4 beats per measure (piece will contain no upbeats).

rhythmic dictation: write the pattern you hear: two measures in 4/4 meter, using eighth, dotted quarter, quarter, half, dotted half, whole notes.

 

Level 6

clap:  sixteenth notes (grouped only in fours), eighth notes & rests, quarter notes & rests, dotted quarter followed by eighth note, half notes & rests, dotted half notes, whole notes & rests, eighth note triplets, upbeats.  Pattern may by in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/8, 6/8 meter.

write: using examples provided, complete the measures by filling in the missing beats (any meter).

rhythmic dictation:  write the pattern you hear: four measures in 4/4 meter, using four sixteenth, eighth, dotted quarter, quarter, half, dotted half, whole notes.
